The Vincent Rapide Series A was the first V-twin motorcycle built by Vincent HRD. Produced from 1936 to 1939, it introduced a powerful 1000cc engine and became one of the fastest motorcycles of its time.

Overview

  • Engine: 998cc V-twin
  • Power: 45 bhp
  • Top speed: Around 110 mph (177 km/h)
  • Production years: 1936–1939
  • Notable for: First Vincent V-twin

The Series A Rapide set the foundation for all later Vincent V-twin motorcycles.

Origin of the V-Twin Engine

The engine was designed by Phil Irving, working with company owner Phil Vincent.

Irving realised that by combining two single-cylinder engines into a 47° V-twin layout, Vincent could create a powerful 1000cc bike using many existing parts.

This idea quickly became reality, and the first V-twin Vincent was built in 1936.

Engine & Performance

The Series A used a 998cc air-cooled V-twin engine with:

  • Overhead valves (OHV)
  • Twin carburettors
  • Dry sump lubrication

Performance highlights:

  • 45 bhp at 5,500 rpm
  • Top speed of 110 mph

For the late 1930s, this made it one of the fastest production motorcycles in the world.

Frame & Suspension

The Series A used a modified version of Vincent’s earlier frame design:

  • Steel diamond frame, lengthened for the V-twin
  • Early cantilever rear suspension (advanced for its time)
  • Girder front forks

A unique feature was the dual-purpose fuel tank, which held both petrol and oil.

Transmission

  • 4-speed gearbox (separate unit)
  • Chain-driven primary drive
  • Wet multi-plate clutch

However, the gearbox struggled with the engine’s power, and riders had to be careful when accelerating hard.

Design & Features

  • Twin carburettors for improved performance
  • External oil pipes visible around the engine
  • Drum brakes front and rear
  • Side stand fitted as standard

Because of its exposed pipework, it earned the nickname:

  • “The Plumber’s Nightmare”

It was also called:

  • “The Snarling Beast”

Launch & Production

The Series A Rapide was first shown at the 1936 motorcycle show in London and quickly gained attention for its speed and engineering.

  • Price: £142 at launch
  • Production ended: 1939

Why the Series A Matters

The Vincent Rapide Series A is important because it:

  • Introduced the Vincent V-twin engine
  • Set new performance standards in the 1930s
  • Led to later legendary models like the Black Shadow

Today, it is a rare and highly collectible classic motorcycle.
