The Triumph Bonneville T120 is one of the most famous British motorcycles ever made. Built by Triumph Engineering from 1959 to 1975, it became a symbol of performance, style, and classic 1960s motorcycling.
Powered by a 650cc parallel-twin engine, the T120 was fast, reliable, and especially popular in the United States. It later evolved into the larger 750cc T140 model.
Overview
- Engine: 649cc parallel twin
- Top speed: Around 115 mph (185 km/h)
- Production years: 1959–1975
- Successor: Triumph Bonneville T140
- Famous for: Speed, racing success, classic styling
The Bonneville T120 was marketed as “The Best Motorcycle in the World”—and for many riders at the time, it lived up to that claim.
Development & Design
The T120 was designed by Edward Turner, one of the most influential motorcycle engineers of the era.
It was based on the earlier Tiger T110, but upgraded with:
- Twin carburettors for more power
- High-performance camshaft
- Improved engine tuning
Key Changes Over Time
- 1959: First model launched (pre-unit engine)
- 1963: Switched to unit construction for better handling
- 1968: Improved ignition system
- 1971: “Oil-in-frame” (OIF) design introduced
- 1972: 5-speed gearbox becomes available
These updates kept the bike competitive as motorcycle technology improved.
Performance & Riding
The Bonneville T120 was known for:
- Strong acceleration
- High top speed for its class
- Lightweight feel compared to rivals
However, early models had frame flex at high speed, which was improved after 1963 with a stronger frame and better suspension.

Riders like Malcolm Uphill helped cement its legendary status.
Bonneville Name Origin
The “Bonneville” name comes from speed records set at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
In the 1950s, racer Johnny Allen achieved speeds over 200 mph on a Triumph-powered streamliner. This gave Triumph huge publicity—and inspired the Bonneville name.
End of Production
By the early 1970s, bigger and more powerful motorcycles were becoming popular. The T120 was replaced by the 750cc Bonneville T140.
Production officially ended in 1975, following industrial disputes at Triumph’s factory.
